Last CWS Pitch at Rosenblatt

I stayed until the end of the last CWS game this season.  Sometimes we leave early to beat the crowd.  Sometimes we leave early when the game is out of hand.  But not the game last Tuesday night between South Carolina and UCLA.  In the best two of three games series, South Carolina had won the first game, so if they won the second game, the series would be over.  For that, I had to stay. It would be the last CWS game at Rosenblatt Stadium.

I wanted to get a picture of the last pitch.  Since the game was in extra innings, if South Carolina (the home team for the game) scored, the game and series would be over.  For every pitch in the bottom of the ninth, tenth, and finally the eleventh inning, I took a picture. Any pitch could have been the last one.  Finally, in the bottom of the eleventh, at 10:56 pm, on a 2-0 count, the last pitch came. I was ready and you can see the result.

Not the crispest of pictures. I had to open up the lens enough to get enough light, and still get a decent picture without too much motion.  I practiced a bit earlier in the game after the sun had set and settled on settings with an ISO of 1250 (I have never taken anything with an ISO that high), the aperture at f/5.6, the shutter was 1/125th second, and I had my 18-200mm lens at 18mm.

I wasn't the only one with this idea to snap the final pitch.  On every pitch, flashes were going off all around the stadium (I didn't use a flash, it wouldn't have done anything for the shot). You can see a flash by the stadium club on the first base line. We all will miss Rosenblatt.  There were lots of people with camera in the stadium that night.

Here are a couple more shots from the on field celebration after the game:
